Social justice assignment

welcome to the presentation on the American nurses associations code of ethics and social justice this presentation was created by Becky Lindstrom and Melanie lab and was narrated by Melanie lab in their 2005 article backfire Butterfield discussed their views of the nursing profession in regards to social justice and health disparities well they believe that Nursing had a long and proud history of advocating for both social justice and the elimination of health disparities they contended that nursing had feared from its social advocacy roots they also believe that the 2002 American Nursing Association code of ethics was poorly poorly addressed the responsibility of the current nursing profession in regards to social justice they called for the inclusion of language into the code of ethics which would clearly define what they believe to be a core value of Nursing and Health inspire the next generation of nurses to return to the social advocacy arena our opinion is at the Annie’s 2015 code of ethics is very clear about the nurses responsibility in terms of social justice health disparities and health equality the code of ethics specifically provision six seven and eight addresses the responsibilities of nurses to advocate for social justice and equality in their practice no matter the setting provision 8 clearly addresses social justice in the elimination of health disparities is a moral obligation of the nursing profession taking into account the innumerable settings in which nurses practice their art not every nurse is going to encounter the same set of two health disparities or social justice concerns the code of ethics clearly states that at the heart of all nursing practices the patient whomever that patient may be individual family or community the needs of the patient are central and that would include advocating for social justice and equitable health care wherever the need is found the slide is by Becky Lindstrom nurses can help address health disparities at a community level dr. camara Jones in her 2012 presentation about social determinants of health disparities discuss four levels of health care intervention she explained these levels with an example of care used to improve neonatal outcomes tertiary care was the NICU secondary care was prenatal care focusing on screening and health prevention primary care was WIC or similar programs that help patients improve basic health while the last level of care was addressing social determinants of health by addressing underlying problems that cause health disparities in health and social justice in the first place dr. Jones used the analogy of a population being pushed over the clip of good health Jones suggests that addressing inequities of the root cause is more beneficial to bring about lasting change to earth health equity maintaining good health is less expensive than treating health problems when they are advanced addressing community health on this level requires a broad view and a creative approach because the determinants of health disparities have a larger cause such as poverty lack of education or cultural norms and practices that are not conducive to health promotion the slightest by Becky Lindstrom Jones in your 2012 presentation stated that programs for health promotion are more successful when the community has a voice in the programming an example of this is in Utah the Utah Department of Health Office of health disparities identified higher incidents of infant mortality in the Pacific Islander population with input from this population the program was developed to provide education and a framework of support to improve neonatal and maternal outcomes in childbirth a series of six classes were developed which included activities in education participant knowledge was tested with a series of before-and-after questionnaires one of the best indicators that the classes were successful was the increase in sass class size over time which increased from 23 to 40 participants ongoing education and support of this kind has made a difference in this community and efforts are I’m going to improve and refine this program the slide is by Melanie lob chin described Samantha Tori knowing is the ability for a nurse to understand the circumstances that have led to the current state of the system as created by factors such as political and cultural environments as well as societal norms this knowing allows the nurse to understand the factors that have created health inequities and disparities according to chin all Nursing is political by nature and chin describes politics as the action one takes to express their values within their societal complex as nurses work towards their goal of helping their patients move towards optimum health they have to endow evaluate the context in which that person lives when barriers to health are discovered the nurse then works to address those barriers nurses work with patients as individuals families groups or communities by assisting patients to overcome obstacles to health nurses become advocates working towards the extinction of health disparities and towards social justice the 2015 aana code of ethics also addresses the responsibilities of nurses to work with patients to overcome barriers to achieve optimal health both am a code of ethics and chin see nurses as advocates and leaders in promoting the health of every patient who are the Centers of nursing care the 2015 am a code of ethics makes the roles and responsibilities of nurses in regards to creating social justice in extinguishing health disparities very clear the code of ethics places patients at the center of Nursing care while allowing the patient’s are not limited to individuals but also take the form of families groups and communities patients are everyone and they all have the right to achieve optimum health nurses should be the one to help facilitate the achievement of that goal being a voice for change in advocate for social justice is best achieve utilizing multiple platforms not all nurses work within a public forum and seeking to extinguish health disparities can take many forms all of which are vital in making lasting change on behalf of myself and my partner I want to thank you for watching our presentation we hope that you have enjoyed the information presented and have a great day
